It's good to start with distrust of any company, but at the end of the day you have to choose one of them. All of the top privacy researchers I listen to trust Proton, and ProtonMail's code is open source (https://protonmail.com/blog/android-open-source/). The other alternative is Tutanota, which is also open source.
I agree, nothing sacred any more. I am wondering, what do you do with all the existing email files? Transfer to the secure email or??? I suppose if i really wanted to look at an old email i could just ask Google.. Wink
Seriously, can you save them all to a different provider, or transfer to something or Someplace? Not real savvy in this area.
Hi Diane, I would get an email client, such as Mac Mail (for Macs) or Microsoft Outlook, or Thunderbird, EmClient or such. If you don't know, an email client is a software program that works on your computer that downloads your email from your email provider.
Glenn, what's the difference between what you've presented and a VPN?
A VPN is a software program that you load on your computer that hides what websites you visit online. Both a good VPN and secure email are important.
Hi Glenn, Proton is connected with M.I.T. I don't trust them. - Tom

So that would transfer all my old files to the new one? Sorry, i am clueless
Yes, it should transfer all of your old emails onto your local computer. But they will still reside on the gmail server too.
Thanks Glenn, i appreciate the info. I'm about ready to move into a cave someplace and ditch all the electronics. Take care
